Aphids – Scientific Name > Aphis punicae Passerini
What is Aphids?
The aphids are small insects which feed on the plants leaves and buds, sucking the sap by means of piercing and sucking mouthparts.
- Eggs: Eggs are very small – white to dull white in colour – layed in both forms winged and wingless, breed parthenogenetically.
- Nymph: The nymphal period lasts for 7-9 days.
- Adult: Adults live for 2-3 weeks and produce 8-22 nymphs per day. Entire life cycle takes 22-25 days. It has 12-14 generations per year.
How does it damage the plant?
- Nymphs and adults suck the sap from leaves, shoots and fruits
- Leaves turning yellowish colour, it can be seen in case of heavy infestation
- Wilting of terminal shoots
How to Control and Manage Aphids?
- Cleanliness is the most effective way to decrease pest & disease infestation. Always keep the orchard free of weeds and plant debris.
- Always clear off all the fallen fruits from orchard floor. This is to check carryover of pest.
- Spray of following Agro-chemical can control pest infestation —
- Monocrotophos @ 1ml/litre water
- Dimethoate@ 2ml/litre water
- Imidacloprid @ 1ml/litre water
- Profenophos 1.5ml + Meothrin 0.75ml/litre
