Insects Management

Insects can be beneficial as well as harmful to an agricultural crop and to our ecology. While few needs to be protected for their benefits and others needs to be controlled for their harmful effects. We consider any insects to be harmful when they start harming the crop below threshold level. Insects are seen and thrive in favorable conditions. They would typically chew leaves/stems/roots, suck sap, lay eggs and transmit diseases. All this will lead to plant damage and cause fruits loss.

Like any other fruit crop, Guava (VNR Bihi) too is susceptible to fury of insects. There are various types of insects–mainly 80 species–which are identified to have epidemical impact on Guava. These insects affect yield and quality of fruits. Out of 80 species, 20 species are classified as major and potentially harmful. Fruit flies, Bark eating caterpillars, Fruit borer, and Coccids like Mealy bugs and Scale insects) are some of the major insects infecting Guava. Minor pests are thrips, white flies, white aphids, cockchafers, stem borers and fruit borers etc.

Technical team of VNR Nursery is in constant touch with VNR Bihi Growers and keep visiting VNR Bihi Orchards, spread across various geographies countrywide. Over last few years, VNR Nursery technical team have put in lots of efforts in understanding the major and minor insects which are observed at various incidences during cultivation cycle. This team has compiled latest information and possible inputs for insect management and control.
